Even these news reporters and late night comedy people broadcasting from home are having issues. Skype connections are buffering and pixelating. Sound is across the board with some sounding perfect and others sounding like they’re talking from the shower on a speaker phone with the water running.
What amuses me most is the background they choose to stand in front of. I’ve seen everything from a blank white wall to very expensive pieces of art. There is no standard. I’m sure if folks knew they would be broadcasting from home, they would carve out an official looking space like the BBC guy.
It’s obvious that some are filming using a smartphone or tablet and the big boys & girls are using real cameras with a light crew and makeup artists. I guess they don’t think we can tell the difference.
I’m enjoying the cell phone gal trying to do a weather report more than Ms. Perfect siting in her highrise condo with a film crew defeating the whole reason she’s at home in the first place – to stay away from people.
Trevor Noah does the best job of playing all sides. He obviously has lighting, a good camera, and good sound, but he sits in front of a basic background with a few items on the shelf behind him, and he seems to have left the barber and wardrobe folks behind. But, he is wearing the same hoodie sweatshirt every night, just a different color. Is that wardrobe or not?
My favorite creative moment outside the studio was Jimmy Kimmel interviewing Bill Burr. Jimmy drove to meet Bill and had an iPad duct taped to his windshield while parked in the middle of the street and Bill stood on the sidewalk as they talked. Not only was the set up funny, the interview was hilarious, too.
I’m just waiting for the next viral gaff to occur to one of these broadcast-from-home reporters. Mr. BBC is still my winner.
